[MeeGo Harmattan] Jolla will deliver MeeGo devices!

As seen on opensmartpad Ltd. Jolla. a Finnish phone manufacturer who will continue the sensational work by Nokia and thus provides new MeeGo devices. The team was founded Jolla from employees of Nokia N9 Meego's team, and some brilliant minds out of the MeeGo community. Are not sensational news? This operating system has just deserves to be circulated. I'm looking forward to the future with the best operating system ever.

[MeeGo Harmattan] Do you miss an application or Feature on the N9? Look at this !

Are you missing an app in your Nokia N9? Or a functionality that an installable app could cover? two threads (here and here) have been opened by qgil as an attempt to highlight applications that are missing in the Nokia Store, in order to bring the attention of developers of those apps or alternatives.

[MeeGo Harmattan] The beginning of the end for the N9 : Harmattan Bugzilla Closed for New Bugs !

N9 Developer states the following :

In November 2011, we opened a public Bugzilla to interact with the N9 user community and receive end user bug reports and enhancement requests. To this date, we have received over 1100 bug reports. We thank you for the active contribution.

At this point of the product lifecycle, we have identified the major issues to be addressed in the upcoming software updates beyond the PR1.2 release. While we will continue to address issues already reported, we are unable to accept any new requests in Bugzilla.

The Harmattan Bugzilla will remain as read only for some time. However, we will continue to process the bug reports already in Bugzilla.

We kindly request you to continue further Harmattan developer discussions, bugs and other topics under developer.nokia.com. We hope to receive your continued support and help us further improve the quality of N9 software.

[MeeGo Harmattan] The default N9 font will change to bigger and better !

This is a pre-warning of one change that will take place in an future software update of the Nokia N9: the default font, "Nokia Pure Text", will be updated as well. This might have an impact on some of your application UIs.

The typeface of Nokia Pure Text itself will not change, but the font metrics will. The most significant change is that by default, the text will take approximately 20% more space vertically, i.e. the height of the "bounding box" of text items will increase.

The current height of the font is actually a bit too small. E.g., some of the diacritic/accent marks or descenders do not fit to the bounding box. Fixing this is important especially for non-european languages using non-latin script. The picture below shows how the same text labels render on two different software releases, PR1.0/PR1.1 on the left and the new version of the font on the right:



Whether this has any impact on your application, depends on how the UI layout has been built. In many cases, there is no impact or the change does not really matter. These cases are e.g.:

• Short text labels centered on top of other graphical items (like buttons)
• Lists and other pannable areas where the size anyway varies.
• By using margins and other buffer, you have anyway prepared for changes in the size of the text items e.g. for localization purposes.

But you might see some small surprises if your layout directly depends on the height of the bounding box of the text items. In Qt Quick terms, that would be the Label.height or Text.height properties.

In many cases, the best approach is to design the UI so that you expect the size of the text to vary both horizontally and vertically, that is needed anyway if you provide localizations for different languages.

Typically, that requires leaving enough margins or other space or placing text in pannable areas.

[MeeGo Harmattan] Shazam and LinkedIn are coming to your N9 !?

Oh yeah it seems, that at least, there's still some interest to port Shazam and LinkedIn to the MeeGo Harmattan powered N9 if we look closely at the elisa PDF file (or the 3rd page of the front page) as this is their best selling device (for October at least)

[MeeGo Harmattan] PR1.1 (20.2011.40-4) software update for the Nokia N9 is live!

Device software update 20.2011.40-4 (aka PR1.1) for the Nokia N9 is out. Already now, you should get a notification about the update. If you can't see it, you can check it manually by going to Settings / Applications / Manage applications / Updates tab, and tapping on the Refresh button.

It is a 218,6 MB Over-The-Air update, so using Wi-Fi connection is advised. After downloading, the installation may take up to 40 minutes.

This software update brings music controls on the Lock screen, improved multitasking and memory management, NFC tag reading, as well as more than 300 smaller enhancements, improvements and fixes. Following the N950, the N9 now also gets Swype keyboard, and swiping down to quickly close an application is now enabled by default. In addition to this, the camera gets color filters and there are improvements in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The first regions and operators have already been targeted, with others to follow in the coming days. So do not despair, if the update is not yet available for your phone.    

The changes and improvements include:

• Faster MfE, syncing only the active folders
• Noise cancellation reduces background noise so your friends hear you better

Nokia N9 gets a new colour : white !

A new addition to the Nokia N9 family with the arrival of the white version of the highly acclaimed device.

White devices are all the rave at the moment. So why was the Nokia N9 not available in white from the start? Frank Zillikens, who heads up the product marketing for Nokia N9, explains: “The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to make sure we deliver the best possible quality for our consumers.”

The white Nokia N9 sports a glossy finish, so it looks slightly different from its matte sisters in black, magenta and cyan. It will be available during the fourth quarter of 2011, starting with the 64GB version.

[REMINDER] Forget about iPhone 4S camera, your N9 is still one of the most advanced !

The specs on the iPhone 4S’s new camera does sound impressive? 8 megapixels, 1080p video, f/2.4 lens, improved image stabilization and LED flash. The description at Apple’s Web site might seems mouth-watering for most of "us", and the non-retouched images taken by the 4S are beautiful.

But i just wanna say don't worry, your N9 is still one of the most advanced camera phone produced yet in the industry beside the N8 :

- The N9's aperture is f/2.2 everyone, that means the N9 camera receives more light than the new iPhone 4s (Apple needed 73% more light from larger f/2.4 aperture to compensate for smaller pixels)

But ! I hate to say it, but for the average user, the iPhone 4S’s camera will, in many ways, be fine knowing how Apple tunes pictures to look vivid but is that what you want? Don't worry Nokia lovers because all N9 camera goodness will make it to other devices from Nokia !

[Briefs] Nokia N9 has the best antenna ever !

3 have now had the opportunity to test Nokia's new smartphone N9 on 3's network and the results have been nothing less than impressive, 3 said !

Nokia N9's transmit and receive characteristics should result in 3 being quite superior compared to all other phones 3 has been tested, and that means among other things, a significantly better network experience on the edge of network areas and in areas with poor signal conditions !

  The expert Christian Nielsen is probably so very impressed by the efficiency of the transmission and reception power of the Nokia N9, that it will be used henceforth as a reference unit in terms of reception quality at the 3 mobile service provider !

"When I run into what we call the network area's outskirts, there is still full 3G coverage on Nokia N9. Some other phones switches already here to a 2G network (EDGE). When I run on into a small forest on route, with the Nokia N9 still stand with full 3G coverage. All other phones I've tested, jump here on the 2G network, but even in the midst of the forest, Nokia N9 full 3G. I get so about 6 Mbit / s speed Nokia N9 in this area and it's crazy! ", says Christian Nielsen.

 He continues: "If I'm in the middle of the forest put the phone down on the floor of the car lost one of the 3G signal bars, and only by holding his hand over the phone for several minutes while it is at the bottom of the car, can I get it off the 3G network and onto the 2G network, " he explains.

 Thus, there are marginal areas in the mobile network, in which decreases the quality of the network. If other mobile phones already on 2G (EDGE) change, so only transmitted at a reduced speed, the Nokia N9 still had full 3G reception. Even in a forest as a speed of 6 Mbit /s was possible.

 This power is not found, according to "3" in any other phone or smartphone. This means that the Nokia N9  has significantly better reception, which in turn has a better voice quality and faster Internet connection to follow.

However, this comes at Nokia does not surprise or astonishment. Markku Suomi, Product Manager responsible for the Nokia N9 says that both the housing of polycarbonate, as well as the absence of a metal frame, preventing interference and thus contributes to good reception.

PR1.3 : user-noticeable changes !

Our friends over maemofanatics.com have managed to get an unofficial user-based impressions about the recently leaked upcoming N900 firmware, In addition to the 100+ bug fixes, some UI elements have been updated, as well as an apparently new driver to interact with the PowerVR SGX530 GPU, here are some of the user-noticeable changes that should come with PR1.3 :

- MicroB (browser), Modest (e-mail) and hildon-desktop (desktop UI) have been updated and will provide a much faster experience, less glitching and reduced process pegging.

- Universal Contact Search has improved response time for displaying results.

- Audio playback no longer causes abnormal high processor usage, and pause/resume playback after a call is much more predictable and works as it should. In addition, the mediaplayer widget ‘play’ button now works.

- Portrait mode transition is faster for all applications that support rotation. Feels “constant” and much more deliberate.

- Accounts being forced to error-offline during new network connection has been fixed.

- Several fixes to Mail for Exchange. Unknown if Google syncing has been addressed.

- You can now enter a lowercase letter at the beginning of a sentence.

- Camera and image browsing has less “chop” and stuttering. Feels much more fluid.

- Delay added to screen unlocking during alarm or phone call. Reduces unwanted input.

Nokia Meego chief exits !

Nokia Meego chief Ari Jaaksi has left the company before the manufacturer has even announced a phone on the platform.

Jaaksi is the third Nokia executive to leave the company recently. Meego is hosting a conference in Ireland next month.
