[MeeGo Harmattan] Jolla will deliver MeeGo devices!

As seen on opensmartpad Ltd. Jolla. a Finnish phone manufacturer who will continue the sensational work by Nokia and thus provides new MeeGo devices. The team was founded Jolla from employees of Nokia N9 Meego's team, and some brilliant minds out of the MeeGo community. Are not sensational news? This operating system has just deserves to be circulated. I'm looking forward to the future with the best operating system ever.

[MeeGo Harmattan] Do you miss an application or Feature on the N9? Look at this !

Are you missing an app in your Nokia N9? Or a functionality that an installable app could cover? two threads (here and here) have been opened by qgil as an attempt to highlight applications that are missing in the Nokia Store, in order to bring the attention of developers of those apps or alternatives.

[MeeGo Harmattan] Shazam and LinkedIn are coming to your N9 !?

Oh yeah it seems, that at least, there's still some interest to port Shazam and LinkedIn to the MeeGo Harmattan powered N9 if we look closely at the elisa PDF file (or the 3rd page of the front page) as this is their best selling device (for October at least)

[MeeGo Harmattan] Sports Tracker heading for Meego and Nokia N9 !

happy to let you know that Sports Tracker is heading for Meego and therefore also the N9!

Development of the app is in full swing as we speak and here are the first screens to show you what the experience will be like.

The app will feature all the tracking capabilities you’ve come to expect from Sports Tracker and also support for the new Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor.

[MeeGo Harmattan] MyMoves : Configurable gestures to your N9/N950 !

MyMoves is an attempt to bring configurable gestures to Harmattan, written in QML/C++. The idea of MyMoves is to be able to create a gesture, and attach an arbitrary shell command into it.

The current prototype of MyMoves consists of two parts:

- mymoveserver, handles the touch events via XRecord, saves the gestures and performs the recognition
- Configuration UI for adding new gestures and starting/stopping the gesture observation
The server is controlled by the configuration UI via D-Bus commands

So. What on earth can we do with this? Let’s take a closer look. Here’s the configuration UI:

[MeeGo Harmattan] Application preview : MeeCast : The new OMWeather !

It’s OMWeather but this time it’s not just a tweak of good ol’ weather widget – it’s a completely redesigned application so we had to choose some more “marketable” name for this OMWeather successor. Let me introduce you: MeeCast.

1. Branding

MeeCast absorbed all key features that you’ve loved in OMWeather like extreme customization, detailed settings, icon sets, GPS tracking and more. But now it has evolved from just a weather widget on your home screen to full featured open source cross-platform solution for developing weather related applications all thanks to Qt and QML. According to Andrew Zhilin : Right now the focus on delivering MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan application as fast as possible but we’re also cooking something really extraordinary for you and I hope we’ll soon be able to show it to the world. But that will happen later this year, right now let me give you a sneak peek on what’s coming up for Nokia N9 (and of course for N950 ninjas too :P)

2. Concept

Since Harmattan got rid of home screen widgets of all sorts ( or is it? ) it has been decided to mimic the “instant access” experience of the widget in our stand-alone application. So we have an app that will load as fast as possible and show all necessary info without carpet bombing your eyes with fancy special effects that QML allows us to do. So here’s the home screen :

There’s nothing much to describe, everything looks pretty intuitive. Your location along with basic but most valuable data right in front of you. Day temperatures are color coded along with the background to give you instant “feel” of the outside conditions. Not so representative with boring Moscow weather but still :)

The “Day details” view shows you all the info available at the moment for chosen day. It has been decided to use text labels instead of icons for maximum readability in all languages (and we have 8 different locales. If you wish to help with adding your native language – feel free to email at vlad[at]gas.by). Also day and night parameters are now divided in two tabs for additional comfort.

All for now, but stay tuned, there’s still landscape mode and testing package waiting to be revealed :)

[MeeGo Harmattan] MusiKloud : Soundcloud Client !

MusiKloud is a Soundcloud application for MeeGo Harmattan N9/N950 allowing search, download and playback a song ! When downloading, you can choose either the 128kb MP3 stream, or the original format ;)

Maemo 5 version will be on the way, once the Meego-Harmattan version is finished according to the developer ;)

Alpha release of Open Media Player to replace N900 original media player !

MohammadAG has jut announced a release of an early development version of  Open Media Player that'll replace the default N900 media player !

mir-translator : Translate text from pictures to various languages !

mir-translator is an application for translating text in photos taken from the N900 camera (like PhotoTranslator). Supports novel interactive recognition techniques.

Leverages the FCam API, as well as custom-modified recognition web service based on Google Tesseract. Uses Google Translate for translation.

Ps : It takes a lot of time to tranlate a simple text, hope this will be adressed in future updates 

MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for N900

Jukka Eklund from Nokia has announced a "MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for N900". This is an announcement of a project, not yet something downloadable for end users.

This seems to be somewhat separate to the existing MeeGo N900 hardware adaptation effort

The target is meanly hackers to upgrade MeeGo a flash on the Nokia N900, which will not be used to develop applications, but first, make the system more responsive, stable ...

Use cases asked for this version are:

Phone calls:

* Make calls Voice (enter the number directly, open from contacts, open call history)
* Receive calls
* A default ringtone
* Volume control (operates via the GUI.)

SMS:

* Send SMS number (entered by hand and from the contact list)
* Receive SMS.

Using the browser on WLAN / Wifi:

* Able to connect to the WLAN AP (with security, etc.)
* Opening a modern complex website (gmail.com, for example)

Interesting project but i was hoping to do this a year ago and just give us a solid stable and fluid N9/N950 (or whatever it will be named if it'll come out some day) by now...

Maemo 5 gets community OS updates !

The Maemo Community Council and Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh are pleased to announce the launch of the Maemo 5 Community SSU project. It is currently in a testing and elaboration phase, and your help is required.

What is it?

Seamless Software Update (SSU), is the term Nokia used to brand the over-the-air updates of Maemo.
Community Seamless Software Update (CSSU) is being developed by the Maemo community, for the Maemo community. It aims to deliver fixes which can't be delivered easily through Extras, such as core N900 packages. It won't, however, bundle software which can be installed through the Extras repositories.
It's got a presence in various Maemo forums:

• IRC: #maemo-ssu on FreeNode
• Bugs: Bugzilla, product: Extras > Maemo 5 Community SSU
• Wiki: Community SSU
• Talk: In-development Community SSU

Who is it for?

Long-term: all N900 users.
Now: power-users, developers, Nokia/Maemo/MeeGo engineers, testers, documentation writers and those willing to risk a re-flash in order to help.

How do I install it?

1. Make sure you're running PR1.3, Nokia's last official Maemo 5 update. To see if you have PR1.3, go into "Settings > About product", you should see under "Version" it has the numbers beginning with "20.2010.36".
2. Go to wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU using your N900 browser.
3. Click on the "Install" arrow next to "Testing".
4. Hildon Application Manager (HAM) will launch and will prompt with you a series of messages and warnings. Click continue and let it install the community package.
5. Once done, close HAM and go into the applications menu. Look for, and launch, for "Community SSU". This will then automatically run through a series of scripts to ensure HAM will now be using community repository for updates.
6. HAM will re-open and present a system upgrade called "Maemo 5 Community SSU". Once installed, your device will reboot.

ThinkContacts : make a phone call to a desired contact using your brain activity !

ThinkContacts is a mobile application developed for the Maemo platform using Qt that allows the user to select a contact from the phone's address book and make a phone call by only using the brain's activity. It is explained and demonstrated in this video using a Nokia N900 and a NeuroSky Mindset headset.

Note: Pay attention to the progress bars during the demonstration part.

FCamera : A camera alternative with manual controls (HDR, DNG, RAW etc.) !

FCamera is an open-source camera application for the N900. You can use it as an alternative to the built-in camera application. It provides significantly more manual control over capture parameters, and shoots raw (in the Adobe DNG format). It also includes some nifty features. It has an automatic HDR mode, which has an HDR viewfinder that lets you preview the full range to be captured. It has a "lucky imaging" mode in which it takes a burst of shots and only saves the sharpest. We've found that this simple trick lets you handhold exposures of up to half a second.

FCamera really has two purposes. It a useful camera application for photographers. It is also a base camera application that students and hobbyists can modify to experiment with new photographic techniques. Given the second requirement, we've tried to be fairly careful about balancing features versus the impact they have on ease-of-understanding of the source. In most cases we've favored the simpler source code, which is why you don't see a lot of custom widgets or fancy icons.

WARNING : for those with titan's kernel, ther're some issues...

FlexiSPY : Very First Spy Application For Maemo 5 !

So far there hasn’t been any spy phone vendors willing to allocate the resources needed to create Maemo spy phone software due to the small number of handsets in the marketplace.

FlexiSPY is able to secretly capture SMS, Call Records, Instant Messages, GPS Locations, listen to surroundings and intercept live phone calls.

What you've seen seems to be the default MeeGo UI, Eldar of Mobile-Review said that the Nokia N9 will have a different UI (probably based on harmattan?) ;)

Demola Innovation Experience: Nokia Augmented Reality Concept

Jaako Keranen speaks to Rafe Blandford, editor of All About Symbian about an augmented reality concept shown at theTampere Innovation Experience @ Demola and guess what !? Yep it was demonstrated on a N900 !

It’s a mix of augmented reality and photo browser and works by using a device’s sensors to detect where the device is (GPS) and where it is pointing (magnetometer and accelerometer).

The notable difference to other’s attempts at this though, is that MAA can see through the earth; this means as well as pointing at the horizon (as with traditional augmented reality photo viewers) and the area around you, you can also point at the ground and see photos on the other side (e.g. if your in the UK, point at your feet, and you’ll see photos from Australia). MAA also includes ‘a birds eye view’, which lets you look down on the earth from above. Geo-tagged images can be drawn from the handset or (as seen in the demo) photo services such as Flickr.

The idea behind the research is to explore the ways in which photos browsing on a device can be better connected to the physical world. It also investigates how augmented reality-based viewing could make it easier to view large numbers of photos.

Firefox Mobile 1.1 – What’s Coming

Mark Finkle from Mozilla Corporation on the Mozilla Mobile team developing Fennec stated the following :

The Mobile Team has been hard at work on the 1.1 release of Firefox Mobile. This release will mainly be a Nokia Maemo release, but the current Android builds are based on the same front-end.

For the 1.1 release, we are focusing on some UI features we didn’t have time to put in the initial release. We are also using your feedback to help improve the browsing experience. You can see the list of planned features on the planning page. As you can see, we have completed much of the work and the beta release is quickly approaching.

Some of the bigger features that have already landed include :

- Form assistant improvements, including autocomplete
